The inspiration for this project stemmed from the opportunity to restore the historic building to its classic architectural heritage. Built in 1931, the bank was one of the first in Canada and is a fine example of Neoclassical architecture. The building features inlaid marble floors and walls, ornate brass handrails and doors, lavish gilded plasterwork, and ornate brass and stained glass chandeliers.
Restoring the building was a challenging yet exciting process. The walls were adorned with hand-painted Neoclassic panels with decorative moldings and hand-painted patterns. The original marble floor in the banking hall, hidden under various flooring materials, was restored, and a new granite and glass staircase was installed to access the mezzanine. The ornate brass handrails were installed and brass walls were carefully hand polished.
The design and construction team had to strengthen and expand the building's infrastructure to accommodate a fitness club, while adhering to strict heritage requirements. The facility, now spanning 1,900 square meters across two floors and a mezzanine, is a unique blend of heritage restoration and modern fitness amenities.
Located in downtown Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the project took three years to complete, including coordination with the Heritage society and obtaining building permits. The result is a breathtaking fitness facility that is arguably the most beautiful gym in Canada, and perhaps the world.
The project was a learning experience for the design team, who had to overcome numerous challenges associated with a heritage building. However, their extensive research and collaboration resulted in a successful transformation, making this project a flagship location in downtown Calgary.
The design was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
